Research Assistant, Global Agriculture & Food

The Chicago Council on Global Affairs


The Chicago Council on Global Affairs seeks a Research Assistant to support the work of Roger Thurow, Senior Fellow, Global Agriculture & Food, and develop and manage content for the Global Food for Thought news brief and blog. This role will provide key support to the Council’s global food security project, which provides new thinking on how the US can advance sustainable, nutritious, and productive food systems in Africa and South Asia. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage the weekly Global Food for Thought news brief, a publication with international circulation that aggregates updates from major media outlets and organizational websites weekly.  Management includes but is not limited to:
    • train and oversee department interns to aggregate weekly updates
    • curate, assemble, edit, and publish the news brief
    • stay up-to-date on relevant news, events, and policy developments
    • in concert with the Research Associate, grow the news brief’s listserv by 2,000 subscribers annually through strategic outreach efforts
  • Support the Senior Fellow, Global Agriculture & Food.  This includes but is not limited to:
  • conduct substantive research on a variety of topics in both international and domestic spheres
  • in concert with the Senior Fellow, publisher, and Research Associate, plan and coordinate a national and international tour to promote the Senior Fellow’s forthcoming book
  • prepare and publish content on the Outrage and Inspire blog
  • work with the communications team to promote content on social media platforms and develop publicity strategies
  • facilitate outreach efforts, coordinate meetings and speaking engagements, and respond to inquiries
  • research, prepare, and publish timely and relevant content on a weekly basis
  • coordinate publication of guest commentary pieces and respond to inquiries
  • coordinate with the communications team to promote content on digital and social media platforms
  • manage the blog’s editorial calendar
  • Assist the Research Associate with management of the Global Food for Thought blog, including:
  • Occasionally assist at the front desk to relieve Reception and Database Services Assistant in meeting/greeting Council constituents and handling incoming calls
  • Provide support at Council events approximately 3 – 4 times monthly (registration, ushering, etc.), requiring some evening and early morning hours
  • Perform other projects as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in international affairs or related field of study; Master’s degree preferred
  • 1-2 years’ work experience in research and analysis; ability to gather and synthesize information thoroughly and efficiently
  • Experience adapting content for digital media platforms 
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail, time-management, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously; thrives in fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Background in international development, poverty alleviation, agriculture, food security, or related field strongly preferred
