Agriculture & Law Advisor - Consultancy, Investment and Sustainable Development Program


IISD is a not-for-profit organization based in Winnipeg, Canada, with the objective to provide “better living for all, sustainably.” IISD’s work on investment in agriculture aims to strengthen food security and create decent employment while responsibly managing natural resources.


IISD is looking for a consultant with specialization in legal issues related to investment in agriculture and food security, for 120 days of consultancy and a duration of 12 months, starting on 1 May 2015 (with a possibility of renewal).

Position Description

The consultant will be responsible for:

  • Research and writing in the fields of agricultural investment, law and sustainable development.
  • Legal advisory services to developing countries on domestic law and contract issues related to investment in agriculture.
  • Participation in training and capacity-building for government officials and parliamentarians on legal and policy issues related to investment in agriculture and food security.
  • Organization of and participation in workshops and conferences related to investment in agriculture and food security.

The consultancy involves regular travel (1-2 times per month). The consultant could be home-based. The Consultant shall be responsible for the payment of income taxes, employment insurance premiums, pension premiums and established as an independent contractor. The Consultant ensure having a health insurance coverage.


The consultant should have the following qualifications:

  • A degree in law or economics.
  • Two to three years experience working in agriculture policy and food security.
  • Two to three years experience with legal research, writing and analysis.
  • Experience working in/with international organizations is desirable.
  • Excellent written and spoken command of English.
  • Excellent written and spoken command of French or Spanish is highly desirable.
  • Excellent personal and communication skills.
  • Strong commitment to the ideals, values and mission of IISD.
